Of the utmost importance to the College is the wellbeing and welfare of our students, and to that end, we provide a number of services to ensure they stay healthy and happy during their time with us.
At Mazenod College, there is a ‘whole school’ approach to student wellbeing. This is supported and made possible by the network of staff who have exceptional knowledge of students, who maintain positive relationships with them and their families and who work with students to address a variety of personal concerns.
Ways we help our students
All Mazenod College students are encouraged to develop career goals, which will help them focus on success at school. This aim is fostered in several ways depending upon the age of the student.
In Year 10, students are encouraged to focus on their abilities, interests, needs and values and to put them into a work perspective. This is in preparation for a Work Experience placement of one week where they can try out and test their career aspirations.
After Work Experience, students return to school with renewed enthusiasm for study. It is now time to focus more directly on choosing subjects for the Senior Secondary School Certificates namely, VCE or VCAL. The students use the various information sources on computer, in the Careers Room and in the College Library to gain a sound knowledge of the required subjects for their particular field and level of interest.
In Year 11, students use the Careers Information to refine their selections or to select new subjects and career directions in which they may have developed an interest.
The final year at Mazenod is often taken up by researching individual courses or occupations in greater detail. Students are encouraged to visit Universities, Institutes of TAFE and employers to get the latest information on their chosen careers.
Mazenod College is an enthusiastic supporter of the Age VCE Career Expo, which is, for many Year 12 students, the first step in the search for a course or work. This takes place in May and begins the process of applying for Higher Education places or work.
Students at all levels are encouraged to seek counselling with the Careers Co-ordinator and to visit the Careers Room for research purposes at lunchtimes, after school and in their free time. A wide selection of course and work information is available for local, interstate and some overseas Colleges and Universities, occupations and employers. The Learning Centre is a College resource that is staffed by specialised teachers and support staff who work with subject teachers, Year Level Coordinators and the College Well Being Team to ensure that all students have every opportunity to achieve the best outcomes – academic, social and emotional.
The Learning Centre supports students through its Literacy and Numeracy programs. Students who are experiencing difficulty with their work requirements can seek assistance from the Learning Centre staff.
A particular focus is the funded integration students and those with learning difficulties. Those who have had interrupted schooling are also catered for through the Learning Centre. These students receive support both in the classroom and through small group withdrawal.
The Learning Centre supports classroom practice by collaborating with subject teachers to plan for student learning, through the provision of assessments to determine the specific learning needs of students who have been referred by teachers and by assisting teachers to develop adjusted resources to improve student outcomes. The Centre is also open to the wider student body at lunchtime for assistance, to catch up with work or to study. Teachers utilize the Learning Centre to tutor students out of class time. A Homework Program operates each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon when students have the opportunity to develop study skills and to receive assistance from teachers.
Subject teachers and Year Level Coordinators can refer students to the Learning Centre. Parents and guardians are invited to contact the Special Education team.
At the Health Centre, a Division 1 Registered Nurse experienced in emergency care and adolescent health is available between 8:30am and 3:30pm each day. Teachers and support staff trained in first aid are available at other times during the school day, on excursions and on camps.
Please ensure student medical information is entered online via the parent portal to assist us in providing the most appropriate care. Inform the nurses of medications your son requires. It is usual for students who have asthma to carry their own reliever medication such as Ventolin in their pockets. Diabetic students need easy access to their diabetes action kits. Other medications should be kept at the Health Centre to be dispensed rather than with students. This helps to prevent medications being lost, or misused by others. Nurses may dispense over the counter medications (for example, paracetamol and antihistamines) as deemed appropriate, unless parents request otherwise in writing.
Please let the College know immediately if your son develops chicken pox/varicella, shingles or measles. Other students may be receiving medical treatment which increases the risk of complications from these infectious illnesses.
Students sometimes suffer from illness or injury during the school day. Parents will be contacted when necessary and may be asked to collect students from school. We do not have the capacity to nurse students throughout the day when they are not fit to participate in their usual school activities. Exceptions to this include students who are undergoing rehabilitation and transitioning back to school after absence, and students managing chronic illnesses.
Parents, please keep your contact phone numbers up to date, including at least a third contact person for times when you are unavailable.
Management plans are prepared for students with serious allergies who may be at risk of anaphylaxis. An Anaphylaxis Kit containing an ASCIA Anaphylaxis Action Plan (recent photo please) signed by your doctor, and an adrenalin auto injector (such as EpiPen) must be at school for your son’s use in an emergency. Students take their “home” kit to all off-campus and out of school hours activities. Please refer to the College Website for the Anaphylaxis Policy.
The nurses have a network of resources, support groups and information available to students and parents. Please contact us if you have any queries or concerns regarding your son’s health or welfare. This can be done by phone on 8561 1159 or through use of the parent portal via the school website.

The Student Counselling Service operates within the context of a ‘whole of College’ approach to providing pastoral care to students. Thus, the pastoral support of students occurs at a level and intensity that is consistent with their needs and issues.
Within this context, Mazenod’s Student Counselling Service is available to assist students, their parents and staff with a range of issues inclusive of, but not limited to:
