Nurturing ethical, thoughtful and active communicators.

At Mazenod we develop students capable of critical thinking, aesthetic appreciation and creativity from Year 7 through to VCE. Our innovative lessons focus on developing students’ abilities to create and analyse texts, moving from interpretation to critical analysis. Through engagement with a rich variety of texts, our students become confident, articulate and critically aware communicators. VCE students regularly achieve exceptional results across the four disciplines of English, Literature, English Language, and Vocational Literacy.

Reading

Students explore how meaning is created in texts, identifying and analysing authorial decisions. They explore how authors use structures, conventions and language to represent characters, settings, events, explore themes, and build the world of the text for the reader. Students investigate how the meaning of a text is affected by the context in which it is created. We offer students a diverse reading experience, exploring texts from different eras, genres and cultures.

Writing

Students produce a range of analytical, creative and persuasive writing. Students learn how to use literary texts as starting points to create imaginative writing in different forms and genres. In developing their writing, students explore how purpose, audience and context affect the choices they make. Students develop skills that allow them to convey meaning, address significant issues, heighten engagement or impact persuasively. As part of the writing process, they produce and share drafts, practising the skills of revision, editing and refining for stylistic effect.

Speaking

Students explore various formal and informal ways oral language is used to convey and receive meaning. They develop and demonstrate knowledge about the appropriate oral language for particular audiences and occasions, including body language and voice. Students develop active-listening strategies and an understanding of the conventions of different spoken texts.
