Transition, consolidation and breadth.

These are years of transition from Primary School and consolidation in the basic skills required for ongoing education; together with exposure to the broad range of options in Secondary school. The subjects offered span all learning areas of the Victorian Curriculum.

Common Curriculum

Students study a common curriculum in Years 7 & 8. Religious Education is core to our mission at all levels, and the key skills of Literacy and Numeracy are consolidated building on the students' primary years. The curriculum is built on a foundation core of English, Mathematics, Science and History; with students getting exciting exposure to a large range of other subjects they can choose to study in more depth in later years. The list of subjects studied is provided in the table below.

Personal Social Learning

To facilitate a smooth transition, students have a Homeroom teacher who also guides them through our Personal Social Learning program and teaches at least one other subject. In Personal and Social Learning students participate in weekly wellbeing lessons using the Resilience Project resource. The Resilience Project has a mission to teach positive mental health strategies to help people become happier and more resilient. Lessons focus on the four key pillars to cultivate positive emotion: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. The Personal and Social Learning program also has a strong focus on connection, purpose, kindness and physical health. Personal and Social Learning facilitates a smooth introduction to Mazenod, providing a valuable resource and foundation for the ongoing development of life skills and positive personal health outcomes.

Language Study and Enhancement Programs

Students do have choice of their preferred Language to study: Italian, Japanese or Chinese (Mandarin). Those with a need for literacy development can choose Literacy Support in place of this Language. Enhancement programs are commenced in a range of areas that can be pursued though to the Senior School.
