Visual Communication and Design

Mazenod College offers a comprehensive Visual Communication and Design program with many future career pathways. All students have these subjects as a core unit in the Junior years and then are offered as electives in the Middle to Senior years.

The course incorporates the three major design fields of Communication Design, Industrial Design and Environmental Design. The key skills and knowledge are scaffolded from the VCE curriculum down to Year 7 and 8. There is a combination of both manual drawing as well as digital applications in each field. Students are encouraged to think in a creative manner and adhere to brief requirements. Topics include Minecraft Characters, Isometric Cityscape, Branding Identity, Product Design and Architecture Design.

There are extensive global employment opportunities for our students ranging from Architecture Design, Landscape Architecture, Graphic Design, Gaming and Animation, Web Design, Product Design and Interior Design. As the world continues to develop and grow in the digital area, there is a strong need and desire for people to think in a creative manner and assist within organizations worldwide.

Art

Students at Mazenod begin their journey in Art in Year 7, where they are introduced to a range of art making activities. Creativity and exploration is the main focus of the program, where students learn through creating artworks in response to artist research. In Year 8 students get to expand on their skills and techniques acquired in the previous year, with creativity and originality underpinning all facets of the art course.

In Year 9, Art becomes an elective subject, providing students with the opportunity to explore more media, including digital art and photography. It also provides students with the opportunity to delve into more depth with their art making activities, spending more time on projects in order to increase their skills and techniques with each medium. At all year levels, students are provided with the opportunity to create their own self-directed folios focussing on areas of personal interest.

As well as promoting creativity, self-expression and confidence, Art provides students the opportunity to undertake any number of creative courses at university. Students present their Art Folios in an interview to gain entry to some of Australia’s finest universities.
