Mazenod Chess program
The Mazenod Chess Club meets every Wednesday after school in the library, where our keen chess players receive a weekly lesson from an experienced senior chess coach.
Our coaches’ expertise has seen us continue to improve to become consistently one of the top chess schools in Victoria. The club has over sixty members and each week they participate in training and practice matches under timed match conditions. Students also have the opportunity to participate in chess development and school-based tournaments during sports time.
Every year we compete in two main competitions.
1. The Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC): Mazenod joined in 1999.
In the ACC we remain the undisputed leader in Catholic Schools Chess, regularly winning Division One of the Open, Intermediate and Junior tournaments.
Since joining the ACC, Mazenod has won:
21 of 23 Open Division One Chess competitions,
19 of 23 Intermediate (Years 9 & 10) Division One Chess competitions,
11 of 11 Junior (Years 7 & 8) Division One Chess competitions.

2. The “Kids Unlimited” (formerly “Chesskids”) State and National Secondary Championships.
Each year we compete in a number of qualifying tournaments that lead up to the State finals. A top-three finish at these titles earns a place at the Kids Unlimited National Titles, held each December.
We have competed since 2006 in these very large competitions against schools from every sector in every State of Australia. Our results have been outstanding.
Mazenod has won;
National Titles in the Middle Years in 2013 and 2016,
National Titles in the Open Division in 2007 and 2021,
State Titles in the Middle Years in 2014 and 2019,
State Titles in the Open Division in 2020 and 2021.
