“Every chess master was once a beginner.”
Irving Chernev

Mazenod College has a long and highly successful tradition promoting Chess. The Chess Club meets every Wednesday afternoon where our keen chess players receive a lesson from an experienced senior chess player and Coach. This expertise allows our players to develop strategies and tactics that enable us to compete with the finest school age chess players in the State and across the Nation. The club has well over eighty student members, and after school each week 30 or more participate in coaching and practice matches under timed match conditions. Chess allows our students to compete and develop friendships with other students across all year levels in the College.

Each year we participate in two main competitions. The Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) competition has seen the Chess team compete in 60 Division One annual tournaments for 54 Premierships and 5 Runners up. The Kids Unlimited State and National Schools Championships has resulted in three Middle Years State Championships and three Middle Years National Championships. Mazenod have achieved a top three placing in 25 out of 34 of these Middle Years tournaments. Mazenod have won two Open State Championships and two Open National Championships.
