Pope Leo XIV: A Historic Connection to the Oblates

Friday, 9 May 2025

Mazenod College proudly joins the global Catholic community in welcoming Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, as the 267th successor of St Peter. He is the first American pontiff. His episcopal lineage traces through apostolic succession to St Eugene de Mazenod, a connection that holds special significance for the Oblate community.

This connection is not just historical but a profound spiritual legacy. St Eugene’s mission to bring the Gospel to the most abandoned and his unwavering commitment to social justice continue to inspire the Oblate community worldwide. With a ministry rooted in social justice and reform, Pope Leo XIV continues this tradition as the Vicar of Christ.

Born in Chicago and serving as a missionary bishop in Peru, Pope Leo XIV's dedication to faith and service aligns closely with the values of the Oblates. His chosen papal name, Leo, is especially significant for the Oblate family, as it recalls Pope Leo XII, who approved the Constitutions and Rules of the Missionary Oblates in 1826.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his ministry, we pray that his leadership may bring peace, compassion, and unity to a world in need. We invite our Mazenod community to join us in praying for Pope Leo XIV, that his message of peace may resonate across the world.
