MOCA receives funding for Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative

Wednesday, 13 May 2026

The Mazenod Old Collegians’ Association (MOCA) has successfully secured a Community Support Grant through the Suburban Rail Loop Authority Community Projects Fund to support a new mental health and wellbeing initiative within the Old Collegians community.

The funding will assist MOCA in establishing a dedicated Wellbeing Committee and delivering Mental Health First Aid training for members of the Old Collegians network. The initiative is designed to strengthen mental health awareness, peer support, and community connection among past students.

The program has been developed following the tragic loss of several members of the MOCA community in 2025. In response, MOCA identified the need for stronger support structures and accessible points of connection for those experiencing mental health challenges or emotional distress.

The Mental Health First Aid training will equip volunteers with practical skills to recognise and respond to signs of mental health struggles, provide initial support, and help connect individuals with appropriate professional services where needed. Once trained, participating volunteers will form a visible support network within the MOCA community.

The initiative builds on successful wellbeing work already undertaken by the Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club and reflects a broader commitment to supporting the wellbeing of Old Collegians beyond their time at the College.

The official funding announcement at Central Reserve was attended by Victorian Premier and Leader of the Labour Party, Jacinta Allan, local Members of Parliament John Mullahy and Eden Foster, and members of the Mazenod community.

The College acknowledges the leadership and commitment of Phil Ryan (MOC1988), Brendan Neil (MOC1983), the MOCA Executive, and all involved in the development of the project.

This initiative represents an important investment in community care, connection, and support across the wider Mazenod network.
