Debating and Public Speaking at Mazenod College
Involvement in the numerous debating and public speaking opportunities at Mazenod provides scope for students to explore and implement the values espoused in the Oblate Tradition.
The program develops students’ awareness of pressing social justice issues at both the domestic and global level, whilst providing a platform for ideas and solutions to be articulated.
Students from Year 7 to Year 12 participate in both the Debaters’ Association of Victoria’s inter-school debating competition (DAV) and the Associated Catholic Colleges’ competition (ACC) at the junior and intermediate levels. The collaborative nature of these programs hones participants’ characters, teamwork and oratory skills.
To support the formation of students’ skills in research and their ability to deliver speeches confidently in formal and public settings, training is provided during lunchtimes via the Junior Debating and Public Speaking club. This program is supported by dedicated staff, the Mazenod Year 12 Debating Captain and students from Years 10 – 12.
Mazenod holds a long and celebrated history of success in Debating and Public Speaking. Our debating teams are regularly placed first in various levels of the Glen Waverley region of the DAV Competition. In 2016, our Year 9 Team reached the Octo-Final stage of the competition (final eight teams out of an initial 1400). Reaching this stage placed Mazenod’s team in the top 1% of the State. Mazenod has also successfully defended its title as Division 1 Champions in either Debating or Public Speaking for the last ten years running.
