Bishop Mark Edwards OMI, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne by Pope Francis in November 2014, made a visit to Mazenod College. Bishop Edwards is the first former Mazenod College student to hold this position and as a result of this appointment had to relinqish his role as Rector of Iona College Brisbane.
Prior to the World Youth Day event in Sydney, Mazenod College hosted the International Oblate Youth Encounter (IOYE) which was a four day gathering of young Oblates from Australia and 31 countries around the world. Organised by Fr Christian Fini OMI, the participants included Mazenod students, staff and a special guest from Rome – the Very Rev Fr Wilhelm Steckling OMI, Superior General of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
The first Sportsmen’s Dinner held at Mazenod College was attended by over 150 students and their fathers. The idea for the event came from Mrs Hansen and members of the Open Football Team and included a three course meal with drinks waiters and special guests. The guests for the inaugural Dinner were Jack Reilly (goalie in the 1974 Australian World Cup Soccer Team), Wayne Richardson (VFL Collingwood Football Club Captain), Mick Henry (VFL Umpire) and Trevor Vincent (athlete).
Rev Fr Richard Harley was the first Superior General of the Oblate religious order to visit Mazenod College. During his brief stay, he met the staff and addressed students at the assembly. In honour of his visit, all students were allowed to finish school at 1.30pm on Friday.
