Australian Beach Volleyball player, Damien Schumann (Mazenod student from 2000 to 2005) won a Gold medal representing Australia in the Mens’ Beach Volleyball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast. Damien and his teammate Chris McHugh also represented Australia at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Bishop Mark Edwards OMI, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne by Pope Francis in November 2014, made a visit to Mazenod College. Bishop Edwards is the first former Mazenod College student to hold this position and as a result of this appointment had to relinqish his role as Rector of Iona College Brisbane.
Australian field Hockey player, Chris Ciriello who attended Mazenod College from 1998 to 2003, became Mazenod’s first Olympic medalist when he won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in London representing Australia in the Men’s Hockey Team. Chris was also part of the National Men’s Hockey team who won Gold at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games as well as at the 2010 and 2012 Champions Trophy and the 2014 Hockey World Cup.
Peter Robertson (Mazenod student from 1988-1993) was Mazenod’s first Olympian. Peter competed at the first Olympic Triathlon event at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and represented Australia in Triathlon at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Peter won a Bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne making him Mazenod’s first Commonwealth Games medalist and won Gold at the 2001, 2003 and 2005 ITU Triathlon World Championships. In 2005, Peter won the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year award with Robin Bell.
