The Rector Fr Kevin Davine OMI attended the Canonization of Oblate founder Eugene De Mazenod in Rome. While at the Vatican Fr Kevin had an audience with Pope John Paul II and was even called up to meet the Holy Father with another Australian Oblate Fr Don Hughes OMI. Year 11 students Peter Dobeli and Greg Schneiders were selected to represent the college at the Canonization and travelled with Fr Davine to Rome for the event.
Fr Kevin Davine OMI began his second stint as Rector of Mazenod College and served in that role from 1989 to the end of 1995. He was previously the Rector from 1973 to 1977.
Mark Edwards, a former student of Mazenod College celebrated his first mass at the college. Fr. Edwards was also the first past student to be ordained as a priest.
Fr Pat Moroney OMI became the fourth Rector of Mazenod College Victoria. He began working at the College in early 1968 when it was still based at St Joseph’s, Springvale. As well as his teaching duties, Fr Pat was appointed to the position of Bursar in 1968. Fr Moroney served as Rector from 1984 until the end of 1988 when he was appointed Rector of Iona College in Queensland.
The new Mazenod College Chapel was Blessed and Opened. It replaced the old chapel which, since 1978, had been located near the entrance of the first floor of the administrative building.
Three students and Fr Pat Moroney OMI departed for the first Indonesia Mission. The purpose of this trip was to provide Mazenod College students experience of the work the Oblate missionaries are undertaking. Funds raised by the Lap-a-thon was used to build a classroom at a high school in Indonesia.
